As the holiday season begins, we’re reminded of the power of generosity and the incredible things that can happen when a community comes together. Giving Tuesday, celebrated each year on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, is one of those special moments—a global reminder that doing good can truly begin close to home.

A Brief History of Giving Tuesday

Giving Tuesday began in 2012 as a simple idea from New York’s 92nd Street Y and its community initiatives. They envisioned a day dedicated to encouraging people to do good, especially as the hustle of holiday shopping—Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday—gained momentum.

What started as a small movement grew rapidly. Within just a few years, Giving Tuesday spread globally, becoming a day when millions of people unite to support nonprofits, volunteer their time, donate resources, and uplift causes close to their hearts.

Today, Giving Tuesday is celebrated in more than 80 countries and inspires hundreds of millions of acts of kindness each year. At its core, it remains rooted in one simple truth: every person has something to give, and every act of generosity can make a difference.

Why Giving Tuesday Matters for Kids Soar

At Kids Soar, our mission is to break the cycle of poverty through education and service, and Giving Tuesday plays a vital role in helping us do that. Each afternoon, our literacy-based after-school program provides a safe, supportive space where children in kindergarten through 5th grade receive one-on-one tutoring, enjoy enrichment activities, build confidence in reading, and eat a nutritious dinner.
